Spam

What is Spam?

Spam is unwanted electronic junk mail. It often:

1. tells you how to get rich quick,

2. makes free offers,

3. invites you to pornographic sites.

How do I get on a spammers list?

Spammers use robots or spiders to search the Internet for anything that looks like an e-mail address. They then sell these lists to other spammers.

Other easy ways are:

1. Posting a message with your e-mail address on a listserv or keypal site,

2. Registering with a site when you visit it. Some sites sell lists of e-mail addresses to spammers. Check the site's privacy policy before you give them your e-mail address.

How can I avoid spam?

1. Use a free e-mail address such as those provided by Yahoo or Hotmail when posting messages on the Internet.

2. Use the settings on your e-mail program that screen for spam and block it.
