Ayumi Tanaka

My name is Ayumi Tanaka. I was born in 1981 and my birthday is Dec 16th. That mean I've just become 19 years old. I live in Fuji city, so I can see a very beautiful Mt.Fuji in winter. It is covered with much snow.

I'm a Tokoha University freshman. My major is English. I have a dream, but I don't know whether I can achieve it or not, so I'm reserching another type of job. Most of all, I want to enjoy my university life, and make nice memories with my friends.

Japanese Culture: The Relationship between Senior and Junior Students

I'll tell you about the relations between upper and lower class men/women at university, what are called senpai (seniors) and kohai (juniors). I think Japanese people care greatly about such relations. The best example is clubactivities at junior and senior high school, I guess. Then, I'll tell you my experience.

When I was a junior and high student, I belonged to the brass band club. The teachers listend to my sound, and gave me one part. It was first clarinet, which played mainly melodies, although I was only in seventh grade. Because of my age, it might get on seniors’ nerves, and they didn't want me to play such a role.

What caused such a thing to take root in Japan? I think that Japanese are not conscious that the feudal system, which is at the back of their mind, is based on classical Japanese. I also don't know whether I noticed it clearly or not, but in fact, I sometimes felt it to juniors. It seems that Japanese people think the seniors have greater abilities for everything, while the juniors don't have them like seniors. That means seniors are superior to juniors in all of the fields.

In Japan, the difference in ages between seniors and juniors may be only one year, I think. However it is a little bit different for each person.

Africa: Somalia

Somalia, officially called the Somali Democratic Republic, is located on the horn of Africa, in the east of the African continent. The total area is about 63 square km. The capital is Mogadishu. They speak Somali, Arabic, Italian, or English. After being an Italian colony, Somalia became independent in 1960.

Islamic people have to pray five times in a day to their God, Allah. There is a day which they must not eat anything, because of the training to understand how important presents from the God are. People have to go to Mecca to pray to him, even if they make a lot of debts for that in their life. Islam is the only religion which believes Allah, and people follow the teaching by Muhammad.

The child who is expected to be a priest in his future, he has to train himself for a long time under a teacher, and get much knowledge of variety of things. The teacher is only a person who can held a rite. Each of them have his own mask. This religion spread in Africa, and it was influenced by many traditional religions.

This gown is an armor which made of cotton. Can you see a lot of squares here? They are bags containing written phrases of the Koran. It means that the hand-written Koran has a power of defense some wars.

Two religions are present in Somalia, one is Christianity and the other is Islam. However there is also a polytheistic religion or the worship of ancestors. They are symbols of rules which a community should observe, so if they get angry, they cause great damage to descendants. As a result of that, people have to soothe their anger by a memorial. Thinking that a king is same as the God is an important thing in traditional religion.

Some areas in Africa which converted to Christianity took a cross or a sculpture from Europe in their religion, and it became like an African taste. The sculpture of St. Antonious is made many times, and it often used as a talisman for treatment.
