News Video Listening Diary

  • It is impossible to learn a foreign language in only a few classes a week.
  • You must listen to English actively and use it as much as possible.
  • One way to improve your English is through listening on your own.
  • Developing listening skills takes a lot of time, so you will have to listen to the same story many times to understand all of the important English.

1. Listening Homework:

  • Your listening homework will be a news video listening diary this year.

2. Each week:

  • Listen to one bilingual news story (one story, not a whole news program).
  • Use the News Video Diary Note-taking Form I give you to write down information about the video.
  • Choose only a short news story and listen to it over and over until you understand it well.

3. If it's a topic you are familiar with or the particular news story is familiar:

  • Guess and write down English words you think you might hear.
  • Listen in English and then write down any words you don't know.
  • Repeat until you understand all the important words.

4. For more difficult or less familiar stories:

  • Choose a news story of interest to you.
  • Listen first in Japanese to get an understanding of the overall meaning of the story.
  • Write down Japanese words whose English meanings you want to learn.
  • Listen in English.
  • Find the English meaning of the words you wrote down in Japanese.
  • Also write down any English words you hear, but are not sure of the meaning of.
  • Repeat.

5. Listening Notebook:

  • Inside the front page of a new notebook, glue the News Video Diary Note-taking Forms I give you.

6. Write:

  • a short summary of the news story;
  • anything you found difficult in the news story or questions you have about the story.
  • 10 new words from your news story in your vocabulary book.
  • You may give me your news video listening diary by e-mail as well.

7. In-class avtivity:

  • Each week you will talk about the news story you listened to with other members in class.

8. Finding Listening Material

  • Video tape the news yourself if you have a bilingual video deck.
  • Each Saturday, I will put four video tapes with bilingual news broadcasts (NHK, BBC, CNN, JNN) in the library. You may listen to them there.
  • Go to this site on the Internet and use the listening exercises there to practice.

Marking: Your video listening will be 10% of your mark.
