Keeping a Vocabulary Notebook

1. This year, you will keep a vocabulary notebook like the one I show you. It is worth 10% of your marks.

2. Write 10 words or phrases a week.

  • Use words from your News Video Diary, topics we talk about in class, or videos we watch.
  • Note: These are to be new words, not words you learned in junior high such as, red, dog, cat, etc.

3. Leave enough space to write information about the word, such as:

  • the English word(s) and whether it is a noun, verb, adjective, etc.;
  • the Japanese meaning;
  • the pronunciation;
  • an example sentence in English showing how the word is used.

Optional:

  • any other useful or interesting information about the word, for example, its history if that is interesting,
  • when the word can or should be used;
  • words that often go with the new word. For example, armed: armed guard, side-arms, armed and dangerous, etc.

4. Organizing your vocabulary book:

  • Organize your vocabulary book alphabetically.

5. Other ways of developing your vocabulary:

  • Listen or watch for the words in your vocabulary book.
  • Use the words you are studying in your conversation in class.
  • Use the words in some English writing you do.

6. Review the words in your vocabulary book sometimes. The more you review, the better you will remember.
